Seine Karriere erstreckte sich über fast ein halbes Jahrhundert bis über das Ende der napoleonischen Kriege hinaus. <br /> <br /> Saumarez wurde auf Guernsey als Sproß einer alteingesessenen Familie geboren. Obwohl Saumarez schon seit 1767 in den Büchern der Fregatte ''Solebay'' als Freiwilliger geführt wurde, war fuhr er tatsächlich erst seit 1770 zur See. Sein erstes Schiff war die Fregatte ''Montreal'', kurze Zeit später kam er auf die ''Winchelsea''.
